Chapel of Our Lady Of Czestochowa [View On Map]

The Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa (fig. 1) is located in the Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The construction of the Basilica began with the lower portion of the church, or the Crypt Church, between 1913 and 1931. Construction of the Upper Church began in 1955 after the Great Depression and was completed in 1959. Read more >

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is located within the main church of the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America. The main church was founded in 1898 by Fr. Charles Vassani and Fr. Godfry Shilling. The hope of the priests was to build a church that had replicas of Holy Sites from Jerusalem, the Holy Land for Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Read more >
Holy Rosary Church [View On Map]

The Holy Rosary Church was founded in 1913 as a parish of Italian immigrants, and continues to serve the Italian-American community in Washington, D.C. The founder of the parish, Father Nicholas De Carlo, had been seriously ill prior to his ordination as a priest in Italy, and vowed to build a church in honor of the Blessed Mother in thanks for his recovery. Mary’s Garden is located on the grounds of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is part of the north terrace of the basilica and is situated on a three-quarter acre site. The garden was designed by landscape architect Brian Kane of the Kane Group in Alexandria, Virginia, and is utilized as an outdoor setting for hospitality, rest and prayer. Read more >
Mother of Sorrows Chapel [View On Map]

The Mother of Sorrows Chapel is located within the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Upper Church. This chapel depicts the Seven Sorrows of Mary (See fig. 1). Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate to the United States, dedicated the chapel on September 5, 1965. Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto [View On Map]

The Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in Washington, D.C. at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America was originally created in 1899. The grotto is a replica of the grotto in Lourdes, France where the Marian apparitions took place. It is located in the gardens of the monastery, secluded from the other areas to allow for quiet prayer and reflection time. Read more >
Our Lady’s Chapel [View On Map]

Our Lady’s Chapel (fig. 1) is located on the west side of the nave in the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, the seat of the Archbishop of Washington, D.C. Though the cornerstone for the church was laid in 1893 and Our Lady’s Chapel was blessed on November 29, 1936 (Philibert 60, 132), it has been repeatedly updated since construction on the cathedral first began, with a new sculpture of Mary added in 1984 to replace the previous one that had been damaged and a restoration of the mosaics in the early 2000’s. The Saint Mary Mother of God Church was originally founded by German immigrants in 1845. These German immigrants wanted a place of worship that not only honored Mary as the Mother of God, but also allowed them to be with other German immigrants, as there were not many places in the area that endorsed German culture. The Woman Clothed with the Sun Mosaic [View On Map]

Covering 3,570 feet, the Woman Clothed with the Sun mosaic decorating the West Apse of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (fig. 1) was originally designed by Joseph L. Young and manufactured by the Ravenna Mosaic Co. (Rohling 86). A gift from the Society of Jesus, the cartoons for it were painted in 1964, though the mosaic itself was begun a year later and not fully completed until 1967 (Mosaics of the National Shrine 62).
