Paul Gauguin’s prints of Eve & Mary
Artist: Agostino di Duccio (Florence, 1418–Perugia?, after 1481)
Date: ca. 1464–69
Title: Madonna and Child Surrounded by Four Angels, also called Madonna d’Auvillers
Last Seen in the U.S.: Unknown
Details: In addition to established emblems of Mary’s purity (the lilies held by the angels), Agostino incorporated into this relief sculpture made for a member of the Medici family the unusual detail of an angel’s face within a medallion on Mary’s forehead. The medallion may signify the privileged spiritual knowledge and understanding—akin to that of angels—that Mary possessed when she became the mother of God.
